They cultivate a core of fawning supporters around themselves, who constantly praise the politician, regardless of what he or she does. A good example in Daly's case is Luke Thomas, publisher of Fog City Journal. In addition, the politician creates a little fief of influence, where everybody immediately does the politician's bidding, whether wise or not. In Daly's case, this is his machine in his supervisorial district. With constant adulation from core supporters, and accustomed to bullying people around in the fief, this kind of politician gets carried away with his or her own power and develops an unrealistic sense of invulnerability. As a result, the politician gets careless and starts making mistakes that undermine the politician's standing. In this case, we have Daly going out of his way to swagger in front of the TV cameras, laughing at the fact that the can force others into silence and even make children break into tears. The Greeks had a word for this pattern of behavior - hubris. It comes from the verb hubridzein, which means "to swell up." It also means "to get an erection." The word, with both meanings, was especially applied by the Greeks to bullying patriarchal males. Hubris is a common theme in Greek tragedies and poems. It commonly ends with what the Greeks called nemesis - the undoing of the protagonist through the accumulated negative consequences of hubris. An example was the bullying Achilles, who forgot about his vulnerable heel. Daly is the protagonist in a play of his own making at City Hall. We the People are the chorus who watch and judge his acting out. Let the show continue.

When he's not being silly or tangential, marc can present arguments that deserve a serious hearing and a response. Such arguments make positive contributions to dialog. The problem is that silliness and tangentiality overtake marc when he's at a loss for words. This is basically a panic response on his part. So I hope that marc can learn to relax a bit when he fears he can't make a rational response, then think things through, and finally put his thoughts into words. The basic principle at work here is a good one for life in general: Stay calm, and take the next step. By the way, getting back to the topic of this thread, I note that no one has been able to present a rational justification for Chris Daly's bullying patriarchal behavior. Yet Daly is a principal leader of our local progressive sect. Think about the implications. (Don't panic, marc!)

Gee, I always thought the antidote to trolls was ignoring them. I get the sense that on some level, the "troll" really has something to say, which the respondents recognize but can't really refute. Thus the bluster and bluff. At any rate, Miltie, I think you're right. MS ought to stop following the horses, and concentrate on building the new fiber-cable wave-gen electicity system (with WiFi) that will give us great service at half the price, while contributing gazillions to the City treasury and whose no-cost-to-the-GF bonds will get hoovered by a willing Wall St. Heck, I'd settle for the Progs doing something about ... a centralized cab dispatch system. Seems like this 20th century technology and organization ought to be the perquisite for Progs before they move on to 'bigger things' (pensions extras not need be part of the package). I'm sure an enterprising political operative can best a public power "Medical Mirk" punk, and put a measure on the ballot redrawing cab dispatches ... even put it outside the administration of the Mayor's office ... and make sure it runs like clockwork. That's because feminism was a vital political force then. Not any more. The members of our local progressive sect keep quiet about Daly's patriarchal bullying or else make excuses for it. That's because the SF sect is now dominated by male chauvinists. Nobody should be surprised at this deterioration. It's part of a larger pattern. The sect has also become a front for the city's wealthy drug-dealing industry. And it is now in the process of becoming a front for the city's wealthy prostitution industry. Thanks, guys.
